Design direction before exhaustive specification
UX expertise remains essential to good software. The SHAPE Framework changes the timing and shape of that contribution by making functioning prototypes available earlier. Instead of requiring complete page-by-page mockups before implementation, UX designers can establish the interaction principles, major workflows, reusable patterns, and important experience constraints that a Product Engineer and coding agent should follow.
The appropriate level of upfront work depends on the problem. Familiar enterprise workflows using an established design system may need a modest initial UX investment. Novel, complex, or accessibility-sensitive interactions may require deeper research and design before implementation is sensible.
Early contribution
The UX designer helps understand users and tasks, identify friction, describe critical journeys, and select or extend approved experience patterns. The designer provides direction that is sufficient for the team to begin implementation without inventing inconsistent interaction models.
Review of working software
As the application becomes functional, the UX designer evaluates actual interaction flows, comprehension, error states, responsiveness, accessibility, and the use of the organization's design system. Changes are discussed with the Product Engineer and, when they affect required behavior, recorded in specifications before implementation is updated.
Shared capacity
UX designers may serve multiple pods, participating more deeply when product risk or interaction complexity requires it. The goal is to concentrate their expertise where it creates the greatest improvement, while allowing Product Engineers to implement routine behavior with approved reusable components.
Responsibilities that do not disappear
An AI-generated interface can look polished and still be confusing or inaccessible. The designer continues to exercise professional judgment about users and usability. The Product Engineer remains accountable for coordinating that feedback with business requirements and implementation.
